The following contains excerpts and paraphrases from

"Don't Think of an Elephant!" by George Lakoff

(a MUST read for ALL Democrats):

The Progressive Morality believes:

  • The world can be made a better place
  • in empathy
  • in responsibility
  • in freedom
  • in opportunity
  • in prosperity
  • in fairness
  • in honest, open, two-way communication
  • community-building, service to the community, cooperation in a community
  • in trust
  • in protection: environmental protection, worker protection, consumer protection, protection from disease, protection from attack

The Conservative Morality believes:
  • The world is a dangerous place
  • Behavior is either right or wrong, which fosters no discussion
  • in obedience to a moral authority
  • in punishment
  • in self-reliance
  • in pursuit of self-interest that produces prosperity, a sign of moral good, regardless of the nature of the pursuit
  • Subsidies or social programs that benefit people are bad (do not promote self-reliance), but subsidies and tax benefits for corporations are good (rewards for achieving  prosperity)

Taxation

The Progressive Morality Position:

Taxation is what you pay to live in a civilized country - what you pay to have democracy and opportunity, and what you pay to use the infrastructure paid for by previous taxpayers: the highway system, schools and colleges, the Internet, the entire scientific establishment, the medical establishment, the communications system, the airline system.

It is patriotic to be a taxpayer.  People who avoid taxes, like corporations that move to Bermuda, are not paying their dues to their country.  It is traitorous to desert our country and not pay your dues.

The Conservative Morality position:

Taxation is an affliction or burden, and therefore bad.

Alternative Energy Development

The Progressive Morality position:

Investment by government in alternative energy sources would create jobs, reduce air pollution, reduce water pollution, protect species whose habitats are threatened by current levels of pollution, lower greenhouse gases effecting global warming, reduce our dependence on Middle East oil, and provide technology for other countries to follow suit, further contributing to the positive environmental effects.

The Conservative Morality position:

Continued exploration for oil and gas by drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Forest. Continue to heavily subsidize the coal and gas industries.  Build pipelines in the Middle East that must be defended and protected by the military (our sons and daughters).

Marriage

The Progressive Morality position:

Marriage is the realization of love through a lifelong public commitment.  It is a partnership, a union, a bond, a sacrament, a home.  Marriage need not be heterosexual.  The issue is one of personal freedom: the state should not dictate who should marry whom.  It is also a matter of fairness, human dignity and full equality under the law.

The Conservative Morality position:

Obedience to a moral authority implies one dominate, strict father figure and therefore marriage must be heterosexual.

Ending Pregnancy

The Progressive Morality position:

The decision to end a pregnancy for whatever reason is always painful and anything but simple.  The responsible approach is to stem the practice of abortion through sex education that teaches preventive birth control. The issue is one of personal freedom: the state should not interfere.

The Conservative Morality position:

Abortion should not be an option for women.  Unmarried women (including teenagers) who have had "illicit" sex should get no sympathy or alternative other than having the child.  Married women are challenging the power of the strict moral authority if opting to end a pregnancy, and therefore must not have the option.

Foreign Policy

At a time when terrorist threats come from groups of individuals rather than states, when wars occur within nations, when "free markets" exist without freedom, when overpopulation threatens stability, when intolerant cultures limit freedom and promote violence, when transnational corporations act like oppressive governments, and when the oil economy threatens the planet's future, what is needed is a new kind of moral foreign policy.  America must become a moral leader.

The Progressive Morality position:

Women's education is the best way to alleviate overpopulation and promote development. Renewable energy could make the world oil-independent. Food, water, health, ecology, and corporate reform are foreign policy issues, as are rights: rights of women, children, workers, prisoners, refugees, and political minorities.

The Conservative Morality position:

Foreign policy is consistently motivated by self-interest, where stability of foreign governments, no matter how repressive the regime, and free trade, for the benefit of U.S. corporations, are tantamount goals.  Military might will be used to obtain these goals.

Terrorism

The Progressive Morality position:

The American response to radical Islamic terrorism must address the three factors present with terrorism:

  • The radical fundamentalist is offended by our culture, and resents American commercial and military incursions on Islamic soil.  We are powerless to change this worldview, however moderate Islamic leaders can.  We must depend upon and foster the goodwill and courage of moderate Islamic leaders.
  • Most Islamic terrorists grow up in a culture of despair, they have nothing to lose.  Eliminate poverty and you eliminate the breeding ground for most terrorists.
  • Terrorists must have leadership, host countries, training facilities and bases, and financial backing.  These enabling factors must be eliminated.
The Conservative Morality position:

Terrorists are evil.  Saddam Hussein is evil.  He must be stopped.  He must be taught a lesson.   We will have regime change, and in the process further our self-interest in controlling the flow of oil from the world's second largest known reserve.  The scourge of war that  sacrifices the safety and well-being of the Iraqi people and ruins the Iraqi infrastructure is worth the result that we hope will happen, which is a free and stable Iraq.
